12.04.2023  •  Press Release

New York, NY, December 4, 2023—Tannenbaum Helpern is pleased to announce the expansion of its Securities and Commercial Litigation and Regulatory and Compliance capabilities with the addition of lateral partners Steven Paradise and Mark D. Shaffer, respectively, to the Firm.

Well-known and highly regarded trial attorney, Steven Paradise, joined Tannenbaum Helpern as a partner in the Firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution practice. He brings nearly three decades of experience representing companies and individuals in trials in State and Federal Courts and in AAA, FINRA and JAMS arbitrations, along with an extensive securities litigation practice and experience leading government and regulatory and internal investigations.

Joining the Firm’s Investment Management practice directly from the New York office of a global law firm after serving as Chief Compliance Officer of BNY Mellon’s Toronto Branch and BNY Trust Co. of Canada, partner Mark Shaffer advises clients with respect to regulatory and compliance matters involving SEC regulations, Federal Reserve and other banking regulations, FINRA rules, and Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering laws and regulations, and has extensive experience representing investment platforms and financial institutions in internal investigations and regulatory enforcement actions.

“The addition of Steven and Mark demonstrates Tannenbaum Helpern’s commitment to growth across the Firm, notably in our litigation, securities, and investment management regulatory practices, and emphasizes the breadth of our capabilities, particularly for our financial services industry clients,” said Firm Managing Partner, Andrew W. Singer.

Paul D. Sarkozi, Chair of the Firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution group, welcomed Steven, stating, “We are thrilled that Steven has joined our group, expanding our deep commercial and securities litigation bench, as well as our trial team”. Sarkozi went on to say, “And personally, I am overjoyed that my partner and friend of many years from our time with Squadron Ellenoff is now part of our Tannenbaum Helpern team”!

Steven Paradise is a nationally recognized litigator with nearly three decades of experience representing companies and individuals in government and internal investigations and regulatory proceedings before the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), FINRA, and state regulatory agencies and state attorneys general offices. He is also an experienced trial lawyer in securities litigation and commercial disputes and has represented brokerage firms and registered representatives as claimants and respondents in FINRA arbitrations.

Investment Management Chair, Wayne H. Davis, lauded the arrival of partner Mark Shaffer, stating, “With Mark’s arrival, our group expands upon all that we can – and will – deliver to our financial services industry clients”. Wayne went on to say, “Mark’s experience, which includes all manner of securities and regulatory enforcement matters, makes him an ideal partner and his prior experience in both private practice and as a CCO within the BNY Mellon organization provides a unique framework for his practice and great benefit to the Firm’s clients”.

Mark Shaffer has a long history representing a range of financial industry clients including broker-dealers, banks, investment advisers, cryptocurrency businesses and FinTech companies, which is complemented by his extensive experience as an in-house counsel and chief compliance officer. He has represented clients in matters relating to alleged currency and equities market manipulation, collusion, insider trading, money laundering, OFAC sanctions, false statements, and accounting fraud.
